Our Blog - Proof organic works: our organic beauty award-winners
We’ve been championing organic beauty since we first opened our doors in 1981, but while its seen a rise in popularity in recent years, there are still no legal guidelines for what defines an organic products in the beauty industry. This makes it all the more important to know what to look out for when considering shopping organic beauty products. So what does ‘organic’ mean to us?
'Organic’ refers to farming methods that work with nature and not against it, and ‘organic beauty’ is the formulation of cosmetic and skincare products using organically farmed ingredients. This is something we are very transparent about, and we’ll always back up our claims with the highest standard of certification, so if in doubt, just look out for the logo.
Putting organic food, textiles or cosmetics in your shopping basket is one of the simplest ways to act against climate change. With around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions coming from agriculture, how we farm will play a key role in the future health of our planet, and the wellbeing of people across the world.
Organic farming methods offer the best available practical model for addressing climate-friendly food production. By maintaining healthy soil through crop rotation, green manure and diversification, and avoiding the use of nitrogen-based fertilisers, organic farming converts atmospheric carbon dioxide to soil carbon while making the earth more nutritious for crops and more resilient to drought, flood and erosion. Working with nature to benefit wildlife and pollinators also has an important role in supporting biodiversity which is vital for food security.
A simple swap from a conventional product to an organic one allows us to help protect the planet for the future, support the highest animal welfare standards and select cosmetics that are free from synthetic fragrances and non-biodegradable ingredients. Just be careful to look out for cosmetics that are certified as organic, because organic claims on beauty products are not regulated by the same stringent legislation as food.
The Soil Association is the UK’s gold-standard organic certification body for food, farming, beauty and wellbeing, and we’ve been working with them since 1991. In 2002, the Organic Health & Beauty Standard was created, and we were the first brand to certify products with the Soil Association under this new standard. In 2018, the COSMOS Standard was created - this standard is specifically for cosmetics and ensures responsible sourcing, promotes organic agriculture, and respects biodiversity, human health, and the environment.
Our organic beauty products are proof that organic ingredients can have a positive impact on our skin, too. Our organic vegetable oils contain benefit-packed vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to nourish and condition the skin and our Soil Association-approved actives have been tested in clinical and consumer trials with amazing results. In short, our organic skincare is proof organic works, and we’ve been lucky enough to win a few awards for it too.
Here are just some of the award-winning organic beauty favourites that our customers keep coming back to time and time again.
