Why choose organic?
Organic products are kind to the earth, as they have no:
- Harmful pesticides
- GM ingredients
- Controversial chemicals
- Parabens and phthalates
- Synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances
They’re also kind to you as they have all their natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals
That’s why we’re pioneers in certified organic health and beauty, having been certified by the Soil Association since 1991. Wherever you see the Soil Association or COSMOS Organic logos, you can rest assured of the quality and integrity of the organic product you are buying – so don’t forget to #LookForTheLogo.
We also follow the Precautionary Principle – you won’t find anything in our products we believe could cause you or the planet harm, just lots of ethically sourced, natural and organic ingredients.

World Land Trust™
The World Land Trust (WLT) works to save threatened habitats acre by acre, creating protected nature reserves around the world safeguarding some of the planet’s most vulnerable habitats and wildlife. Our packaging is Carbon Balanced through the World Land Trust™, which means that we offset the amount of CO2 used to make our packaging by protecting tropical forest. Since 2012 we’ve helped save over 1,000,000m² of endangered forest, offsetting 250 tonnes of CO2.
We’ve never used plastic microbeads in any of our scrubs and polishes and are proud to have successfully lobbied the UK government, alongside Greenpeace and Fauna & Flora International to lobby the UK government to #BanTheBead. We’re now continuing the campaign around the world with our international partners. You can choose products free from plastic ingredients with the Good Scrub Guide, Beat the Microbead App and Look for the Zero guide. Find out what else we’re doing to help protect our oceans here.
The vital bee is under threat and our pioneering Bee Lovely campaign has raised over £120,000 for bee friendly causes since its launch in 2011. With over half of UK bee species having declined in the past 50 years and 97% of wildflower meadows having disappeared since the 1930s, we’re proud to support bee-friendly organisations with sales of our nourishing and uplifting Bee Lovely range. We are also proud to have played a key role in the successful campaign to secure a ban on neonicotinoid insecticides, having handed in a 120,000-strong petition to 10 Downing Street calling for an EU-wide ban.
Organic is best
We believe buying organic is a vote towards a more sustainable future. This is why we campaign for organic, working with the Soil Association asking people to #LookfortheLogo, especially during Organic Beauty and Wellbeing Week. For more information about why Organic is best click here.
Certified ethical sourcing
The world’s first health and beauty company to be awarded 100/100 for ethics (in an independent audit by the Ethical Company Organisation), we trade sustainably and ethically. We believe that our mission to enhance and protect people's health and wellbeing starts with the very first seed, long before our ingredients arrive at our eco factory. That’s why we build strong, lasting relationships with growers who use organic, sustainable and wild-harvesting practices. We certify products with the following organisations to independently verify our ethical standards, so you can just #LookForTheLogo.
We certify our products with the Soil Association, internationally recognised for their incredibly high standards for organic food and beauty. This guarantees that a product contains the highest levels of certified organic ingredients. Our new products are now certified (by the Soil Association) to the new robust organic standard for health and beauty worldwide COSMOS Organic.
We believe that beauty and household products should be cruelty free, and are proud to be Leaping Bunny approved. A global programme, Leaping Bunny requires cruelty free standards over and above legal requirements.
All of our cosmetic, personal care and household products are approved under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny programme, the internationally recognisable gold standard for cruelty free products. We adhere to a fixed cut-off date policy and proactively monitor our suppliers to ensure that our products adhere to the Leaping Bunny criteria. Our supplier monitoring system is also independently audited.

FairWild ensures a fair deal all along the supply chain and support for the sustainable use of wild-harvested ingredients. In 2013, we’re happy to say we introduced the world’s first FairWild™ certified organic frankincense.
All of our products are vegetarian and many are also suitable for vegans (see our individual product pages or contact Customer Services for details of our vegan products) and we only use sustainably sourced, organic honey, beeswax and propolis.
protects the planet
As an ethical company, we’re mindful of our responsibility to mitigate climate change and think it’s important to lead by example. That’s why, as well as trading ethically and sustainably, we actively reduce or off-set carbon emissions throughout our business.
In 2008 we became the world’s first high street retailer to be certified CarbonNeutral® by Natural Capital Partners, having reduced our net carbon emissions to zero. Through them we purchase annual carbon credits in support of their Makira Forest Protection Project (pictured here) in Madagascar. This helps protect one of the world’s top five biodiversity hotspots by limiting deforestation and working with communities to support low-impact farming practices.
Having installed 700m2 of solar panels at our eco factory in Dorset, we now generate more than 5% of our own electricity, topped up by a 100% UK sourced renewable tariff. We also choose 100% renewable electricity and gas for our stores.
In 2017 we became the first national company to commit to the ‘Refill’ scheme, actively encouraging customers to come in and refill water flasks, to reduce the usage of single-use plastic bottles. Find out more about our progress on sustainability.
We use recyclable packaging, sourced from the UK wherever possible to reduce transport miles. All our gift boxes and product cartons are FSC® (Forestry Stewardship Council) sustainability-sourced, and use World Land Trust™ certified Carbon Balanced packaging. This means that we offset the amount of CO2 used to make our packaging by protecting tropical forest. Since 2012 we’ve helped save over 1,000,000m² of endangered forest, offsetting 250 tonnes of CO2. Find out more about our iconic blue bottles and what you can recycle.
